Nasdaq's Story

The Nasdaq of today is the result of a carefully orchestrated plan to diversify our business model. Our transformation was driven by our ability to create opportunities in areas adjacent to our core businesses--many of which are non-transaction based and rooted in innovative technology.
The Nasdaq Story

Our Businesses

Nasdaq is built strategically around four complementary business segments – Tech, Trade, Intel and List – that guide our clients as they pursue opportunities to create, or maximize, value in the world’s capital markets.

Tech

Nasdaq's Exchange and Business Technology

Our Technology Solutions represent Nasdaq’s commercial technology and software business. They provide exchange and business technology that supports our financial industry and corporate clients in all aspects of their business or marketplace.

Building from our core matching engine, we provide support throughout a trade’s lifecycle – Trading, Management, Surveillance, Governance, Risk and Compliance, Post Trade, and Market Intelligence. Clients include exchanges, clearinghouses, CSDs, brokers-dealers, regulators, and public and private companies.

Our Market Technology business is the world’s largest provider of exchange technology solutions and a top provider of broker solutions. Our technology powers 85 marketplaces in 50 countries and 1 in 10 of the world's securities transactions.

Trade

Trade Technology that is Open and Transparent

Our Trade business segment is built on our market-leading technology. It brings buyers and sellers together in an open and transparent environment that represents one of the world’s largest networks of exchanges, operating in 26 markets worldwide, including three clearinghouses and five central depositories. We provide trading, clearing, settlement and depository services across cash equities, derivatives, fixed income, debt commodities, structured products, ETFs and other asset classes. We also offer full trade support – from pre- to post-trade.

Fast and reliable technology, state-of-the-art routing capabilities and outstanding customer service are the most in-demand features for trading platforms, and are core market differentiators for us – and for our retail, professional and institutional clients. In the U.S., The NASDAQ Stock Market is the single largest liquidity pool for U.S. equities in terms of shares traded. Our options markets represent approximately 25% of the total U.S. equity options trading, and commodities offerings include power, natural gas and carbon emission markets, tanker and dry cargo freight, fuel oil, seafood derivatives, iron ore, electricity certificates, and clearing services.

List

List with the Nasdaq Market

The revolutionary list model that Nasdaq developed more than 40 years ago serves as today’s standard for markets worldwide. We bring the combined strengths of our entire business – exceptional customer service, visibility and market-intelligence resources – to our listed companies, making Nasdaq the premier listing venue for the world’s most exciting companies.

A diverse selection of approximately 3,800 listed companies with $U.S. 10.1 trillion in market value choose to list on our U.S., Nordic and Baltic exchanges, representing industries such as retail, health care, finance and technology. For smaller growth companies, we offer access to financial markets through our First North alternative marketplaces in Europe. In the U.S., Nasdaq Private Market (NPM) identifies partnership and support opportunities for private companies years before they may go public.

Intel

Capital Market Insights and Resources

With our Intel segment’s market data, global index and Corporate Solutions, our clients worldwide have the market insight and resources they need for market transparency and the most informed trading, investing and valuation decisions. Nasdaq is home to many of the world’s most closely watched indexes, with approximately 41,000 Nasdaq global indexes. The companies making up these indexes represent more than 98% of the global equity investable marketplace.

Nasdaq was among the first in the U.S. to offer stand-alone data services customized to modern traders’ needs, and as data has become the lifeblood of the trade, we remain rooted in, and excelling at, advanced technology and data distribution.

Our award-winning market-data services range from real-time data feeds and web-based reports to plug-and-play technology for instant access to market data. We also continue to redefine the workings of global indexing and the interactions between indexers, sponsors, investors and exchanges.

For example, Nasdaq Global Indexes are continuously offering new opportunities for financial product sponsors across investable products, and for asset managers to measure risk and performance. Our Corporate Solutions streamlines the distribution of critical market information to the world’s leading brands, transforming investor relations, public relations and governance into a competitive advantage for our public and private company clients.
