On October 25, the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Nasdaq hosted the 2016 NCSA and Nasdaq Cybersecurity Summit. The summit has been held at the Nasdaq MarketSite for several years as a part of National Cybersecurity Awareness month, bringing together industry leaders to discuss the future of Cybersecurity.

This year’s theme was “Securing Smart Technologies in a Cutting-Edge World.” The benefits of using new technologies are astounding, and continued innovation will streamline processes for consumers and businesses alike. Gartner, an information technology research firm, estimates that 20.8 billion devices will be on the internet by 2020. Despite the benefits these innovative technologies provide, billions of connected devices have potential to be compromised and create serious cybersecurity risks.

Michael Kaiser, Executive Director of the National Cyber Security Alliance and Jon Ramsey, CTO, SecureWorks joined Nasdaq in a Facebook Live interview to discuss how businesses and agencies are working together to identify and block some of these threats. The discussion was timely following a national headline-making cyberattack in Mid-October. To secure enterprises from malicious activity, it is important for companies to prioritize incorporating security into new technologies.

Kaiser and Ramsey suggest the largest opportunities in cybersecurity can be found in a developed culture of understanding. If firms understand the opportunities and risks that come along with innovation, they will be able to follow the best practices to building and monitoring these technologies.
