The House Financial Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Securities and Investments held a hearing on U.S. market structure on Tuesday, June 27 with a number of industry executives, including Tom Wittman, Global Head of Equities at Nasdaq. Click here to read the full testimony. One of the issues raised was around the shrinking number of public companies in the United States, down by almost 50 percent in the past 20 years.

“Project Revitalize is trying to ensure that the public markets are an attractive source of raising capital,” Tal Cohen, SVP of North American Equities at Nasdaq, said. “These small and mid-sized companies are so important because they are part of the economic engine of growth, and job creation and broader wealth distribution is driven by them.”

Nasdaq’s Project Revitalize is our blueprint for revitalizing the U.S. capital markets to create a vibrant ecosystem that delivers enhanced capital information opportunities, a more inviting environment for growth and innovation and accelerated job formation and wealth.

Cohen explained that within Project Revitalize, Nasdaq has identified three key areas of fundamental structural concerns;

  • Reconstructing the Regulatory Framework
  • Modernizing Market Structure
  • Long-Termism
