Biotech Leading the Nasdaq-100 Index Performance

Nasdaq-100 is one of the preeminent large cap growth indexes. It is comprised of the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq, which includes high profile companies such as Apple, Alphabet, Facebook and Google as well as some other lesser known companies such as Nvidia, Incyte, Fastenal and Biomarin Pharmaceuticals. Since the end of October, the index has been flat with a return of 0.03%. Much of the return of late has been driven by some of the smaller companies in the index. Since October, the top 10 performing companies are as follows:

SYMBOL

COMPANY NAME and MTD RETURN
NVDANVIDIA CORPORATION -- 23.62%
REGNREGENERON PHARMECEUT -- 21.67%
VRTXVERTEX PHARMACEUTIC -- 21.28%
INCYINCYTE CORPORATION -- 20.17%
CELGCELGENE CORP -- 16.90%
BIIBBIOGEN INC CMN -- 13.92%
FASTFASTENAL CO -- 13.60%
BMRN BIOMARIN PHARMACEUT -- 13.59%
TSCOTRACTOR SUPPLY -- 13.52%
CSXCSX CP -- 13.34%

Given the run-up since the election, not surprisingly 6 of the top ten performers have been Biotech companies.

Currently, there are 10 companies in the Nasdaq-100 that are Biotechnology companies with a weight of 8.6%. There are an additional 6 other companies that fall in the Health Care industry, putting the total number of Health Care companies in the index up to 16 with an aggregate weight of 10.9%.

The Nasdaq-100 being historically thought of as a tech index has also led to the misconception of the index having companies that have little to no earnings, not yet begun paying dividends, and little to no sales. This is certainly not the case today and has not been so for quite some time actually. Over the last decade, companies have grown stronger by increasing earnings, beginning to execute on and increase dividend policies while growing top-line revenue.
